All requirements of the TrinkwEGV can now be implemented digitally with RiskPlus
The first hurdle has been overcome: over 350 RiskPlus customers submitted their documents to the authorities on time. The reports and exports included a catchment area description, hazard analysis, risk assessment, investigation programme and a summary of the results. Our customers contributed to this successful delivery: their feedback on functions, optimisation options and practical experience flowed directly into the further development of RiskPlus. This knowledge not only helps to make the software more practical, but also optimally supports water suppliers in the next phase - the inspection by the authorities.
Since 12 November 2025, the authorities have been checking the submitted documentation for completeness and plausibility. Based on these assessments, measures can be defined to minimise risks in the drinking water supply - for example by imposing conditions in the catchment areas. The process often reveals where there are gaps and where information still needs to be collected.
The definition and implementation of the measures is also a communication task. Affected water suppliers must be informed and the effectiveness of the measures is later reassessed by the authorities.
Water suppliers are generally obliged to regularly update their risk management programme. In the event of new risks or changed framework conditions, the measures must be adapted and the investigation programme adjusted if necessary. It is therefore worthwhile for water supply companies to always stay on the ball and deal with any changes in their daily risk assessment work with RiskPlus and regularly add new data from the laboratory.
While the TrinkwEGV focuses on the systematic identification and assessment of risks in catchment areas, the Drinking Water Ordinance (TrinkwV), which has been in force since 24 June 2023, creates the framework for a safe and healthy drinking water supply. It defines limit values for microbiological, chemical and physical parameters and is aimed at water suppliers, operators of drinking water installations and monitoring authorities. It also addresses landlords and operators of public buildings. By introducing a risk-based approach, the Drinking Water Ordinance 2023 marks a paradigm shift away from pure „end product control“ towards preventative, holistic and process-orientated risk management. It introduces the elements of hazard analysis, risk assessment and risk control for water supply systems, which result in a risk-based investigation plan for monitoring drinking water quality. It also integrates the findings from the TrinkwEGV so that the entire water supply process chain is taken into account.
Anyone who deals with the Drinking Water Ordinance at an early stage can record and evaluate systems and processes in good time, identify weak points and optimise internal processes. Another task will be to provide employees with targeted training and to systematically develop or update documentation. Investments can already be planned in a targeted manner in order to guarantee the security of supply and high quality of drinking water.
The transition from the TrinkwEGV to the TrinkwV offers water suppliers the opportunity to recognise risks at an early stage, design processes efficiently and gain long-term planning security. With RiskPlus, risk assessments can be carried out systematically, comprehensibly and efficiently - a decisive advantage for the safe drinking water supply of tomorrow. As the software is developed dynamically and in line with practical requirements, we can be informed at any time of needs for user-friendly risk management for the water supply.
